Château-d’Oex, capital of the hot air balloon
A hike to La Pierreuse Reserve or along the Sentier des fourmis (Ant Path) is an asset to Château-d’Oex, where peasants practise the art of traditional cut-outs. “Lofty” Château-d’Oex hosts the International Balloon Festival every year at the end of January.
Château-d’Oex is a traditional village, surrounded by lush, green countryside. The site is particularly well-suited for walks.
The commune of Château-d’Oex boasts countless walking trails, and the Natural Reserve of La Pierreuse is undoubtedly one of the jewels amongst them. There is nothing like walking in the heart of the pasturelands or trekking along the high peaks, giving in to the charming sound of cowbells then wrapping it up by savouring a delicious l’Etivaz AOC cheese, to experience the core feeling of life at its best…
In the chalets some peasants practise the art of traditional cut-outs. The Museum of the Old Pays-d’Enhaut houses an interesting collection of cut-outs, the oldest of which date back to the 19th century.
Didactic trails, an open-air swimming pool, mountain scooters, wall-climbing, zip-wire, mountain bikes, river sports are but a few examples of the many possibilities offered by this beautiful area in the summertime. And Château-d’Oex is where adventurer Mike Horn (1966) has his home port.
