Bex: salt and wine

As a winegrowing village, Bex has been exporting its wine and its salt for centuries. The salt mines can be visited. The Alpine botanical garden, La Thomasia, located on the foot of Grand Muveran, is a region offering countless hikes.

Enjoying a southern climate, the sunny Bex vineyard mainly produces Chasselas, Gamay and Pinot Noir.

The discovery of a saline source in the 15th century led to the commercialization of the salt mine until today. These salt mines portray the history and the salt extraction techniques in the 50 km of galleries, which are open to the public.

On the Pont de Nant pasture (1,260 m), the Thomas family founded the Alpine Garden La Thomasia in 1891. Built against the spectacular western rock face of Grand Muveran, the garden preserves and collects rare and fragile plants. It sensitizes both schools and the public to the Alpine flora.

The massif of Grand Muveran (3,051m) offers dozens of marked hikes, some of which include stays in mountain huts.
